a couple of years ago, i pulled out my ayurvedic cookbook and indulged in a little self-analysis, giving myself the book's "what dosha are you?" test. (there are three basic dosha types, which roughly correspond with the elements: vata/air, pitta/fire, and kapha/earth/water.) apparently i am a pitta-kapha. which, according to the ayurveda, means (among other things) that i should not eat tomatoes (or, at least, eat them only in moderation), lest i unbalance the pitta within.
i do try to cook and eat at least somewhat ayurvedically, most of the time. but i am weak, as you can maybe tell from this picture. tomatoes! they are so luscious! fresh from the ferry building farmer's market, with basil, mozzarella di bufalo, a little salt, olive oil, and some balsamic ... [sigh of contentment]. i'm not sure i could survive without tomatoes. at least, i can't think of a better lunch.
